Hackmanite — Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

Hackmanite is one of mineralogy's genuine party tricks — it's tenebrescent, meaning its color actually changes with light exposure. In daylight it sits as a soft, pale purple. Hit it with UV and it flares into a vibrant, saturated purple that fades back over time — then under longwave UV specifically, it glows a warm orange instead.

This piece comes from Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan, one of the classic localities for gem-quality hackmanite. It arrives in a perky box with a black label typed in neon yellow ink — so when you hit it with UV, the label itself lights up right alongside the stone.

Pick your specimen above — each one is photographed individually so what you see is exactly what you get.

Hackmanite's purple color fade is normal and part of its nature — re-expose it to UV (including sunlight) anytime to bring the color back.
